The Globalopen Gem 20cm Gemstone Sphere Globe is Globalopen’s luxury collector piece — a 20-centimeter globe constructed from genuine semi-precious stone rather than the ABS composite used in Globalopen’s standard range. The sphere is hand-assembled from inlaid stone tiles — lapis lazuli for the ocean surfaces and malachite for the continental landmasses — set into a carved spherical form in alternating tile sections following the coastline boundaries of the world’s continents and ocean basins. Lapis lazuli provides the deep cobalt blue of the ocean surfaces, a stone whose color has been associated with the sky and sea across virtually every ancient civilization. Malachite provides the green-black banded surface of the continental regions — a stone whose natural patterning, when polished, creates a swirling surface character unique to each individual piece. Each Globalopen Gem globe is therefore visually unique — the malachite banding pattern varies across every tile and across every sphere produced from the stone, making each globe a one-of-a-kind object in the most literal sense. Country borders are inlaid in fine gold wire set into the stone surface and polished flush, visible as a bright line against the stone without the visual interruption of a printed label. The sphere sits in a hand-fitted polished brass cradle stand with three legs and a ball-and-socket connection that allows the globe to be tilted to any angle for examination.
