The Globalopen Geo 20cm Geology Globe is a thematic scientific globe designed for earth science education — a globe that replaces the standard political or physical map with a tectonic plate boundary map, showing the mosaic of lithospheric plates that form the Earth’s outer layer and the boundary types between them that generate most of the Earth’s volcanic and earthquake activity. The globe surface maps all 15 major tectonic plates and the 20 or more minor plates that compose the Earth’s lithosphere, each plate delineated by a boundary line color-coded for boundary type: red for convergent boundaries where plates collide and subduction or mountain building occurs, blue for divergent boundaries where plates move apart and new crust is generated at mid-ocean ridges, and green for transform boundaries where plates slide horizontally past each other. Plate names are labeled centrally within each plate territory. Subduction zones — the boundary sections where one plate dives beneath another — are marked with a sawtooth symbol on the overriding plate side. Active volcanoes are marked with a small triangle symbol at their geographic locations: the Ring of Fire around the Pacific, the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, and the East African Rift are all fully detailed. The major earthquake belts are shown as transparent colored overlays. Continental outline and landmass position are printed in a neutral grey to provide geographic reference for the tectonic content without competing with it.
